How Young is Too Young for Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty before and afterA question specialists at CG Cosmetic Surgery are constantly being asked by young clients, parents, and the medical field is that of rhinoplasty: how young is too young to have a nose job? And moreover, what factors in a young patient can determine that answer, and how much does the motto of “every patient is different” come into play with this very popular procedure? In order to best address the question of age limit in rhinoplasty, CG Cosmetic Surgery offers the following factors that must be considered by both the patient and the attending cosmetic surgery facility, and certainly on a case-by-case basis.

A rhinoplasty, or by more casual terms, a “nose job”, is a surgical restructuring or “reshaping of the bone, tissue, and cartilage in the nose” (CG), and one of CG Cosmetic in Miami’s most popular and successful cosmetic surgeries. There are two typical reasons that clients come to our office desiring a rhinoplasty: for vanity purposes-they just don’t like their nose, or for breathing purposes-in the case of a deviated septum. Young adults have the same reasons for wanting surgery, as many adult clients do; however, there should be some limitations when this procedure is considered for adolescents.

1.       Age Requirement: The medical field most often agree that-unless there is a unique case of true medical need-a rhinoplasty should not be performed on a child younger than 15 or 16 years old. The main reason in this case being, because the nose is not fully formed until these years are present, and thus, should not be messed with, for the sake of potentially making the nose look or perform worse.

2.   Long Healing Time: For an adolescent considering rhinoplasty, the decision should never be made lightly, as the healing time after a nose job can last up to a year. Common after effects of a rhinoplasty include, but are not limited to, the following: swelling, soreness, and bleeding. Moreover, the actual nose result that was the ideal result of the nose job, might take up to a year to be reached.
